Aware of this need, the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) and the European Business Council (EBC) in Japan have released the women’s health primer, Healthier Women, Healthier Economy: Building a stronger economy by empowering women through better health.
On May 17th, we welcome three key leaders in the movement to raise awareness and promote investment in women’s health: Honorable Hanako Jimi, Member of House of Councilors, LDP, Dr. Belen Garijo, CEO Merck Healthcare & Member of the Executive Board, and Ms. Akiko Matsumoto, President of NPO Fertility Information Network (Fine). The three will discuss the importance of investing in women’s health, and their own work in driving businesses and governments to take action.
Dr. Belen Garijo, CEO Merck Healthcare, is responsible for Merck KGaA Darmstadt, Germany’s Healthcare business sector, comprising the Biopharma, Consumer Health, Allergopharma and Biosimilars Business.
As a leader in women’s health, she has positioned Merck as the co-chair of the APEC Healthy Women, Healthy Economies initiative, with the goal of convening governments, private sector, academia and other interested stakeholders to raise awareness and promote good practices to enhance women’s economic participation by improving their health. She will share with us this work so far, and the outcomes of the initiatives early implementation.
Ms. Akiko Matsumoto, President of NPO Fine, a grassroots non-profit patient association, has focused her time on supporting couples who face infertility, and advocating for broader access to reproductive health technologies. She will share with us the results of 2015 survey of working women on the challenges they face in undergoing treatment, as well as her own patient-centric views on what Japanese government and businesses can do to better support couples who face the challenge of infertility.
Honorable Hanako Jimi, a doctor herself, will share the Government of Japan’s efforts to empower women in the workplace, and her thoughts on how women’s health is tied to their economic empowerment. Further, she will share the status of current efforts legislators are taking to realize their vision of a Japan with increased workplace diversity, and improved women’s health, as well as some of the challenges they have faced along the way.
