The EU General Data Protection Regulations (“GDPR”), the most comprehensive reform of data protection law ever envisaged in the EU’s history, finally became effective on May 25, 2018. It was reported on the eve of the effective date that nearly 80 % of Japanese companies affected still had not completed compliance implementation. If you are not yet compliant, you should start immediately. But no need to panic. First it is important to understand what GDPR really means to you and how it affects your business. The presentation will include the basics of GDPR, how GDPR affects Japanese companies, enforcement trends, and the recent discussion and agreement between the EU Commission and Japan Personal Information Protection Commission regarding the personal data transfer from EEA to Japan.
