about possibly game-changing medical technologies: Regenerative medicine
may cure or alleviate currently intractable conditions and become a
growing market in the future. Human induced pluripotent stem cells and
embryonic stem cells are attractive source materials with great
potential for regenerative medicine; however, there are many issues to
resolve before their promise can be achieved. Come hear Dr. Kazuhiro
Sakurada, one of the global leaders in stem cell research, discuss
exciting stem cell technologies and the potential and challenges for
using stem cells in regenerative medicine.
Dr. Sakurada is senior researcher and chief distinguished researcher of
Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc., where he has worked since
September 2008. Previously he served for 8 months as Chief Scientific
Officer of U.S. based start-up iZumi Bio. Before that, he was Head of
Research Center Japan, Head of Therapeutic Research Group for
Regenerative Medicine and member of the Global Research Management Team
for Bayer Schering Pharma (now Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals), as
well as a member of the Executive Committee of Bayer Yakuhin until
December 2007. Prior to the merger of Bayer AG and Schering AG in June
2006, he was a member of the Executive Board of Nihon Schering and a
member of the Corporate Research Management Team of Schering AG. From
1988 until September 2004, he was employed by Kyowa Hakko where he held
positions of responsibility in Regenerative Medicine and stem cell based
drug discovery. Dr. Sakurada's PhD is from Osaka University. Over his
career, he has had many stem cell related research publications and
patents.
