The Intellectual Property Committee will be hosting officials from METI to speak about the system for geographic indicators or "GI marks" in Japan and the current situation for protection of GI marks under trademark law and unfair competition laws. Examples of GI marks would be "Satuma Shochu" or "Hakusan Sake." The scope of protection given to GI marks will become an important topic within TPP negotiations. While it is too early for METI to speak about TPP, understanding the current system for protecting GI marks in Japan is an important first step in framing the issues that will invariably arise in the future. Please note that this event will be limited to 25 attendees and the presentation will be in Japanese.
NOTE: This meeting is OFF THE RECORD
