Join us to commemorate World Hepatitis Day (July 28) and Japan National Liver Week (July 23-29) by hearing an inspiring presentation from Charles Gore, President of the World Hepatitis Alliance and Chief Executive of The Hepatitis C Trust. A former hepatitis C patient himself, Charles played an instrumental role in founding World Hepatitis Day in 2008. He later cajoled, persuaded and inspired the 200 member countries of the World Health Organization to take a vote and make it official in 2010. Of the 200 countries in the world, this year Charles decided to spend World Hepatitis Day in Japan. One reason is that the Japanese government has a strong track record since 2002 in promoting hepatitis screening, treatment and vaccination.

Another reason is that the Japanese Ministry of Health sponsored events in Tokyo will play a key part of a globally coordinated effort to help the World Hepatitis Alliance set a new Guinness World Record for the largest global advocacy event in history. Despite a busy schedule, Charles agreed to speak to business leaders about why people from all industry sectors should be concerned and what they can do about it. After his speech we will hear a Japan perspective from Dr. Junko Tanaka, one of Japan's leading researchers and advocates for improved hepatitis screening, vaccinations and treatment.

500 million people around the world are infected with Hepatitis, including 3.5 million in Japan, and most have no idea that they are infected. Worldwide, hepatitis viruses B and C, are the leading cause of liver cancer, accounting for more than 75% percent of cases. Each year nearly one million deaths are attributed to infections with viral hepatitis, including over 30,000 deaths in Japan. Viral hepatitis infects people that are rich, that are poor regardless of their ethnic affiliation or religion affiliation - it is really something that is truly global.
