Featured Committee: External Affairs Committee (EAC) Chubu
Our mission at the External Affairs Committee in Chubu (EAC Chubu) is to strengthen and develop relationships with public and private organizations to improve Chubu's international environment.
The EAC Chubu's vision is for the Chubu area to be the leading economic area in Asia. To achieve our vision, we have set various performance indicators and milestones to monitor our progress.
Our biggest goal this year is the release of the Chubu Chapter's first position paper. The inaugural paper is entitled "The Greater Nagoya Initiative," and is a collaborative project with the Greater Nagoya Initiative Center (GNIC). The paper identifies some of the Chubu region's key attributes and premises on how the Chubu region can become the leading economic area in Asia.
The EAC Chubu is chaired by Harry Hill, with co-Vice Chairs Yuji Suzuki and Darrell Harris. We organize networking events and luncheons with Japanese and American government officials, leadership workshops and monthly planning events.
On Wednesday, September 26, 2012, Harry Hill gave an informative presentation in Tokyo entitled "The Three Major Crises to Strike the Japanese Media Environment in 2011: Lessons from the Trenches," with the Direct Marketing Committee. Attendees learned how the dramatic changes in the TV landscape affected viewership and how to get most out of their TV marketing budget. Harry also gave a bold prediction on next year's big trend in advertising.
Also on the same day, the EAC Chubu hosted Professor Edward Yagi of Nanzan Business School. The workshop was our second installment of our leadership series. Edward's event entitled "The Pen and The Sword" challenged attendees to think out of the box and define common characteristics of this century's greatest leaders (both good and bad). Attendees also learned leadership definitions, better ways to think more strategically, and developed a deeper understanding of leadership theories. Edward's event was such a huge success that we have scheduled him for a 5 part series. Edward is a full professor at the Nanzan University Graduate School of Business Administration in Nagoya, Japan. His primary areas of research and teaching are international personnel management and international marketing. He also has a distinguished military service career, serving 20 years of combined student officer, active duty, and reserve service. In addition, he was decorated by both the Japanese and U.S. governments. Formerly a career Foreign Service Officer, Edward supported U.S. commercial interests, promoted sales of U.S. goods and services, and advanced U.S. strategic and policy objectives worldwide. He served at U.S. Embassies in Japan, Egypt, and Kenya and at the U.S. Consulate in Nagoya. He retired from the U.S. Foreign Service in 2011.
Our next event will be a collaboration event with the Women in Business Committee in Chubu on Friday, October 26th. We have the honor to host Ms. Susan Roos. Ms. Roos is an employment attorney as well as the wife of U.S. Ambassador John Roos. Attendees can learn her thoughts and insights on the challenges that women face in the Japanese workforce. Ms. Roos attended Stanford University before earning her J.D. at the University of Southern California. She then practiced labor/employment law, defending employers in all aspects of employment-related matters, including wrongful termination, sexual harassment, discrimination, ADA access issues, and trade secret litigation before both federal and state courts. She was a partner at the global firm Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton before starting her own firm in 1995. Arriving in Japan in August 2009 with her husband and two children, Ms. Roos has been very active in both the American expatriate and Japanese communities.
