Japan's announcement to begin consultations with the United States and eight other countries with an eye towards joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations was lauded by the Japanese and American business communities as a means to stimulate the Japanese economy, and as a pathway to stronger U.S.-Japan economic relations. A TPP with Japan would be a game changer, creating the world's largest free-trade zone, representing 36 percent of world GDP.
Despite a significant amount of support for the TPP, policymakers in Japan remain divided on the issue. Indeed, the challenges of trade liberalization are not unique to Japan and the experience of other countries can be instructive. Please join us for a special event with Washington insider Ambassador Clayton Yeutter, former U.S. Trade Representative and Secretary of Agriculture, to hear his insights on the benefits of TPP and the challenges of negotiating an agreement such as the TPP. Ambassador Yeutter currently serves as Senior Advisor at Hogan Lovells and specializes in trade and agricultural policy.
Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Ambassador Yeutter held cabinet and sub-cabinet level positions in four U.S. administrations. In these capacities, he helped drive the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement, the predecessor to NAFTA, and steered the 1990 Farm Bill through Congress, laying the groundwork for a more market-oriented policy structure for American agriculture.
