In November 2011, Japan expressed its interest in potentially joining the TPP negotiations. At the same time, Mexico and Canada also stated their intention to join the TPP. Seven months later, Japan is still determining whether it wants to join, while Mexico and Canada have been formally invited.

Does Japan really intend to join the TPP negotiations, and if so, when? What other options does Japan have with respect to trade policy, and how is TPP prioritized?

Please join us for the start of the TPP "Breakfast Briefing" Series. You are invited to hear the views of Risaburo Nezu, Senior Executive Fellow at Fujitsu Research Institute, and Yorizumi Watanabe, Professor of International Political Economy at Keio University. C.Lawrence Greenwood Jr., Senior Managing Director at MetLife Alico, will moderate an interactive discussion with our speakers.

Mr. Nezu is an economist and trade policy expert with the Fujitsu Research Institute. Prior to joining FRI, Mr. Nezu enjoyed a successful career with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, where he engaged in trade and industry policy-making, including extensive bilateral negotiations with both the U.S. and the EU as well as multilateral forums such as the WTO and the OECD.

Professor Watanabe joined the faculty at Keio in 2005 following a long and distinguished career in Japan's foreign service. He has been significantly engaged in all the major bilateral and multilateral trade negotiations in which Japan has been involved in the past two decades. This included the role of policy advisor to relevant Ministers, and postings to Japan's diplomatic missions in Brussels and Geneva.

Mr. Greenwood is responsible for government relations at MetLife, following a career of service as a U.S. diplomat, which featured numerous assignments related to trade and investment (including serving as U.S. Ambassador to APEC). Mr. Greenwood also served as Vice President at the Asian Development Bank.
