After years of contraction, the start of 'Abenomics' seems to be a turning point for retail trade in Japan. However, in light of the planned tax hikes, this might be a short revival. Rather than swinging with the market, it is important to observe structural changes in Japan's retail trade and act against this background:
- Over the last years private consumption has reduced more and more towards necessities and Abenomics so far seems to mainly benefit affluents.
- Traditional retail formats are challenged by reduced spending and increasing fixed cost burden.
- Online trade continues to expand and drives new sub segments and new business models.
- Free trade agreements open new competition not only for domestic brands but also existing foreign brands.
Following the analysis of recent 'Abenomics Effects' and longer-term growth determinants for Japan's retail trade, a set of implications for businesses is developed and exemplified via recent cases. A discussion of implications for (foreign) businesses closes the talk and prepares the ground for the Q&A session.
