The United States remains mired in a crisis that many of us find hard to comprehend. Growth is anemic, the monetary base has grown off the charts thanks to Quantitative Easing, inflation is muted, and unemployment remains stubbornly high. Richard Koo, Chief Economist at Nomura Research Institute, will speak to us about the underpinnings of these disturbing aspects of today's economy, help us understand what lies ahead, and what might be done to improve our long term prospects. In addition to his insightful weekly reports, Richard is an accomplished author and spoke to the ACCJ several years ago about his book, Balance Sheet Recession, a fascinating insight into what went wrong in Japan and why it has taken so many years to emerge from the collapse of the bubble. After graduating with a MA in Economics from Johns Hopkins University in 1979, Richard became a Doctoral Fellow of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System ('79-'81) and then served as an economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York ('81-'84). He entered Nomura in 1984 and has developed a reputation as one of the most respected and insightful economists on Japan. In recent research reports, he draws interesting parallels to the problems Japan faced after the burst of the bubble with those the U.S. is experiencing today. Sign up now for what is sure to be one of the most interesting and memorable lunch presentations of 2011.
