A little over a year ago, Japan suffered an unprecedented natural disaster that devastated a large part of the Tohoku region and critically damaged the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini Nuclear Power Plants. As the nation continues on its road to recovery, one question still looms large in the minds of many; just how safe is the radiation situation in Japan today? The ACCJ is fortunate to have Captain Reid Tanaka, the U.S. Pacific Commander's Special Assistant on Nuclear Matters during the Fukushima nuclear crisis, to address that question. At the time of the nuclear accident and over the course of the past year, Captain Tanaka, a nuclear trained career U.S. Navy officer, has been advising civilian and senior military leadership (including the US Ambassador and Embassy staff, the U.S. Pacific Commander, and the U.S. military leadership in Japan) regarding the risk posed by the reactor plants, the on-going battle toward stability, and the radiological impact for the people living/remaining in Japan. Throughout his special assignment, Captain Tanaka has worked with professionals from several agencies, has had access to meetings with Government of Japan officials and staff, and has had access to many experts and data. While providing you with the information and the context to draw your own informed conclusions, Captain Tanaka will explain why, in his assessment, we who live outside the evacuation zones are quite safe. He will also leave plenty of time for your questions.
