In light of common overarching objectives and to strengthen our impact, the ACCJ Board has voted to combine the forces of the APEC/APCAC Task Force and the TPP Task Force into a new ACCJ group, which is being upgraded to a regular standing committee. The new combined group is tentatively being called the U.S.-Japan Regional Leadership Committee.

As relates to the Trans Pacific Partnership, the Committee will focus on leveraging the TPP opportunity to enable the U.S. and Japan to play leading roles in establishing a high standard economic and trade architecture for the region while helping Japan drive reforms needed to improve the business environment for ACCJ members and their companies. With respect to APEC, the Committee aims to support U.S.-Japan collaborative leadership in APEC and other fora, providing a strong, unified private sector voice for sound trade and economic policies. It will also have the mandate to further drive ACCJ leadership in the Asia-Pacific Council of American Chambers of Commerce (APCAC) on issues that affect members.

By combining our resources, the new Committee expects to enhance advocacy and engagement opportunities and to provide a broader scope for the members of the two Task Forces, while also facilitating networking opportunities in collaboration with other ACCJ committees and external organizations.

We would like to thank you for your past involvement in the Task Force(s) and ask for your continued support and engagement in the new Committee's activities.

Among immediate actions to be discussed are:

  • Disseminating information on the upcoming APCAC Annual Conference, which will take place March 21-22 in Taipei, mobilizing interested attendees from ACCJ, and organizing input into the APCAC Annual Report, which will become a basis for APCAC's advocacy initiatives around the region and at its own DC Doorknock in June.
  • Launching a discussion series on TPP, providing networking opportunities with other associations and thought leaders and educational sessions on TPP-related issues.
  • Report-out on the first APEC Business Advisory Council meeting (taking place in Manila January 20-25), including the opportunities for private sector input into the APEC work plan in areas effecting ACCJ member interests.

Please join us at the inaugural meeting of the new U.S.-Japan Regional Leadership Committee, details of which can be found above.
