The global population, and the Asia Pacific region in particular, is rapidly ageing with implications for swiftly rising health care/social costs. In the next 20-30 years, the greatest growth in ageing populations will be in low and middle income countries. A WHO priority is to enable ageing populations to remain healthy, active and independent for as long as possible. Coupled with this are needs to prevent and treat disease (particularly noncommunicable), reduce their risk factors, and create socially supportive environments whilst reducing inequities. Medical and assistive devices are important tools to help achieve these goals.

Come and hear about a new global initiative led by the WHO to address how industry, government, academia and civil society can collaborate to develop and promote innovations to support healthy, productive ageing of populations.

• How innovations in technology and health/social systems can support ageing populations.
• Understand where demand will be greatest as well as emerging markets.
• Learn about priority health and social support needs of ageing populations in multiple country contexts.
• Learn about how industry, government, academia and civil society can collaborate.

Discuss what are the key issues and barriers to innovation and what are the solutions.

Last year, World Health Day had as its theme ageing, and a World Health Assembly resolution focused on ageing. This is helping to shape priorities for international development. We will see how it affects the emerging post-2015 sustainable goal development. In the meantime, Japan leads the world as a super-aged society, with several countries not far behind.

Mr. Alex Ross is the Director of the WHO Centre for Health Development in Kobe, Japan. He is a public health policy expert trained at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) with specializations in health systems. Prior to his joining the Centre, he served as Director for Partnerships at WHO Headquarters (Geneva), as well as in senior advisory posts to Assistant Director-Generals for Communicable Diseases and for HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria.
