At that time, twenty seven Shinkansen (Bullet Trains), including the
newly introduced high speed Hayabusa, operated by JR-East (East Japan
Railway Company), were running between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori stations.
Fortunately there were no severe accidents or any injuries to passengers
or staff caused by the earthquake.
Japanese Shinkansen have an exceptional safety record with no passenger
fatalities in more than 40 years of operation. How did JR-East control
its safety and operational systems to avoid any accidents on that
terrible day?
We will hear from JR-East's Mr. Tomomichi Ota, General Manager
International Department, about exactly what happened with the
Shinkansen operations at that time and the safety measures that were
used.
NOTE: This meeting is OFF THE RECORD
