Last year, Phil Nichols was tasked to come to Japan to lead an aggressive marketing strategy for the Japan subsidiary of Ethicon Endo-Surgery. Having no prior experience in Japan, and little practical

knowledge of the local market, and also being primarily known as a "process" guy, Phil transformed his team into a working unit that

provided solid information to the sales teams and propelled Japan's operations into remarkable results. In addition, he caught the attention

of his superiors both in Japan and at HQ by pushing forward a global strategy for one part of the business.

No longer considered a "process" guy, Phil has adapted his leadership style to focus on specific business results in the Japan market and has

offered to share his experience and lessons learned in an ACCJ Special Event: Leadership Conversations.

Leadership Conversations is a program that is highly interactive, featuring a short presentation by the speaker, a moderated discussion of the central ideas, and a longer question and answer period focusing on the groups' experiences, case studies and questions. We hope you will walk away with a better idea on different approaches to focus on

leadership in Japan, with expertise provided by Mr. Nichols and experiences of fellow members of the Chamber.

Phil Nichols is currently the Director of Marketing for Ethicon Endo-Surgery Japan, a Johnson & Johnson company. Prior to that, he has headed up Global Marketing, Group Global Product Development, and

Business Process Excellence groups for Ethicon Endo-Surgery in Cincinnati. He worked at GE Aviation as a Six Sigma Black Belt and LEADS company as a consultant.  Phil spent 10 years as a US Air Force Officer. Phil lives in Tokyo with his wife and daughter.
