Countries and companies around the world are switching to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in what is becoming the global standard for the preparation of public company financial statements. Already, more than 100 nations and reporting jurisdictions permit or require IFRS for domestic listed companies. Although the United States and Japan have yet to set dates for IFRS implementation, the number of countries continues to grow. The Tokyo Stock Exchange now permits its listed companies to file their financial statements under IFRS without using JGAAP (with certain restrictions). And both U.S. and Japanese companies can learn about IFRS conversion issues from the experience of European companies operating in Japan. This apparently inevitable transition to IFRS makes it pertinent for management to start sizing up now the volume and variety of financial, business, tax, and operational changes that IFRS implementation will require, as conversion to IFRS is much more than an accounting exercise. In fact, IFRS may affect many aspects of a company's operations, from information technology systems and tax reporting requirements, to internal reporting and key performance metrics. At the same time, specific areas under IFRS, such as rules for lease accounting, insurance contracts and revenue recognition, continue to attract debate and consideration. Please join us to discuss these and other issues with our panel of IFRS experts: Markus Fuchs, Partner, IFRS Advisory Services, KPMG AZSA June Howard, Senior Vice President, Financial Services, IFRS; Chief Accounting Officer, Aflac, and Tatsumi Yamada, Former IASB member and Partner, KPMG AZSA The panelists will discuss European, American, and Japanese perspectives on the global adoption of IFRS, with an emphasis on financial instruments, and its impact on business.
