The Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) is facing challenges from the normal opposition, from within the party and from insurgents in the form of Mr. Hashimoto's Isshin no Kai, while the popularity of the the Noda Cabinet seems on a downward trend. Talk of forming new parties is in the air amid urgent concern over consumption tax proposals, reform of the social security system, whether and how to restart Japan's nuclear reactors, the relocation of the Futenma base and prospects for new policies regarding China. Can the DPJ withstand the pressure and what sorts of new coalitions are possible? Who is likely to emerge as a leader of Japan during this unstable period? What do these circumstances mean for the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the U.S.-Japan Alliance? You are invited to hear Professor Gerald Curtis, Burgess Professor of Political Science at Columbia University, express his views on these important topics.
