Prime Minister Noda has had three economic priorities: raising the consumption tax, raising the consumption tax and raising the consumption tax (with the restart of just two nuclear reactors as a fourth). Not only is the consumption tax the wrong tax at the wrong time, but Noda has totally ignored the primary issue affecting both the budget deficit and a host of other issues: raising Japan's growth rate. The notion that Japan could be the next Greece is not economic analysis; it is a scary sales pitch being used to sell a deeply unpopular tax.
Richard Katz is Co-Editor of The Oriental Economist Report (TOE). He is also the author of two books on Japan's economic travails. The first is entitled "Japan: The System That Soured--The Rise and Fall of the Japanese Economic Miracle." The second book is entitled "Japanese Phoenix: The Long Road to Economic Revival." Mr. Katz's essays have been published by Foreign Affairs, The Washington Quarterly, The International Economy Magazine, Challenge and The American Prospect.
