After long consideration, Japan appears to be nearing action in the Diet to legalize casino gaming. This may result in the development of large-scale "Integrated Resorts" (IRs) akin to those recently completed in Singapore and pioneered by Caesars Palace in Las Vegas over 45 years ago. IRs, in the right locations and under the right regulatory environment, would be multi-billion dollar investments, creating tens of thousands of jobs, boosting tourism, MICE activity and generating significant tax revenues for Japan. This is a particularly rare example of a large-scale, structural growth opportunity. Ironically, Japan is already one of the world's largest gaming markets via non-casino gaming such as pachinko, horse racing, lotteries, on-line entertainment and more; however, Japan is the only G8 country which prohibits casinos. Many local and central government officials are now recognizing the opportunity a casino-driven entertainment sector represents to make Japan's tourism sector more internationally competitive.
Ms. Jan Jones, Executive VP of Government Relations and Communications for Caesars Entertainment Corporation and former two-term Mayor of the City of Las Vegas, will share many of the realities and learnings from both the private and public sector perspective. This will include insights on the key factors which largely have been seen to determine success in other jurisdictions and "myth busting" various often misunderstood aspects of this professionally-operated and strictly-regulated industry. Having presided over Las Vegas during its growth from receiving 15 million annual visitors to 35 million annual visitors and becoming the number one tourist destination and convention destination, Jan is uniquely placed to speak on local government considerations and public/private sector partnerships. She is a dynamic speaker and robust advocate, also acting as a Director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
