The Financial Stability Board (FSB), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Group of Twenty Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (G-20) have played a core role in financial and macroeconomic policy steps to lead a sustainable recovery from the financial crisis at a global level. Yet economic and structural differences between regions require tailoring to local conditions. Will approaches to financial sector regulation designed with the financial crisis in mind have unintended consequences in the Asia-Pacific? What particularly are the implications of these measures on the macro-economy, markets and funding liquidity arising from the deleveraging of financial institutions?

The occasion of the IMF/World Bank meetings in Tokyo is an ideal opportunity to discuss the on-going reform of the financial sector and its implications for regional growth. To that end, the ACCJ is working with partners to organize a special roundtable that will focus on these critical topics: what are implications of new international financial regulations for Asian economies, particularly on growth and credit availability; and how can balance be achieved between the goals of prudential regulation and financial inclusion, especially for small and medium enterprises – the most dynamic job creators.

Invited panelists include Japan FSA Vice Commissioner for International Affairs Masamichi Kono, U.S. Department of Treasury Assistant Secretary for International Markets and Development Marisa Lago, Bank of Korea Governor Kim Choongsoo, Philippine Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Director of Loan Syndication Lorenz Jorgenssen, and IMF U.S. Executive Director Meg Lundsager. Private sector commentators will include Nomura Holdings Senior Managing Director Shigesuke Kashiwagi among others.

These panelists, after offering their perspectives on the topic will engage in a moderated discussion with each other and representatives of private sector financial institutions, moderated by former U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs and U.S. Representative to the Financial Stability Board Clay Lowery. This timely dialogue on approaches and solutions to financial regulation and growth will be followed by a period for audience participation.
