The Japanese government is struggling with energy issues brought on by the continued shutdown of most nuclear power plants in Japan which has forced Japan to import natural gas and oil to fuel power plants. In 2012, Japan's trade deficit rose to a record $78.3 billion as imports of oil and other fuels surged and a bitter territorial dispute with China has cut exports to the world's No. 2 economy. In early January of this year, it was reported that China has asked Vietnam not to implement a new maritime law, the Vietnamese Law of the Sea which includes disputed islands within Vietnams sovereign territory, a move which China said would escalate bilateral tensions.

Are countries in Asia entering an era of escalating conflicts over untapped energy resources? Would increased production of shale gas in the United States potentially provide a stable supply of energy to Japan? And what other energy related factors could potentially affect trade relations and economic growth in the Asia Pacific region?

Please join us in welcoming Rajiv Biswas to provide a broad perspective on the dynamics of energy in the Asia Pacific region. Mr Biswas spoke at the ACCJ last year and was highly regarded for his breadth and depth of knowledge on complicated subjects.

Mr. Biswas is Senior Director and Asia Chief Economist at IHS. His extensive previous career experience as an economist has included working as Director for South-east Asia for The Economist Group and as Executive Director for Asia-Pacific Country Risk for UBS.
