Outbound mergers and acquisitions were an unknown concept to many mainland Chinese companies prior to 2008, but since the onset of the financial crisis, they have become increasingly active in global M&A and investment. Although the motivation for China outbound M&A and investment has been primarily focused on energy and natural resources, the countries and sectors that are attracting Chinese M&A and investment are likely to become more diversified with increased attention on the acquisition of intellectual property, new distribution channels, technology and operational know-how.
So how are they doing? Simon Sole will share his thoughts with the ACCJ on China's new global quest. Chinese companies have encountered a number of political and other problems, in particular resistance from governments in developed economies concerned that Chinese investment may be a national security threat.
In this context, have Chinese companies acquired a unique risk profile when expanding globally, one that is defined by nationality and is markedly distinct from their international counterparts? Have Chinese buyers developed an appropriate risk assessment model for market entry into different geographies? Please join us for this intriguing talk to try and dig for answers to these and other questions.
