The impact of the events that have taken place at the Fukushima Daiichi

nuclear facility continue to be felt, even after the situation has

improved. Japan is now dealing with both the immediate effects,

including radiation risks, as well as the longer term issues related to

the safety of nuclear energy.

How can Japan assure other countries that products coming from the area

are safe? What could be a potential roadmap for the development of the

long-term radiation protection mechanisms? How can Japan help to ensure

the safety of nuclear power from here on?

Dr. Jens-Uwe Schmollack, Ph.D., Physicist, TUV Rheinland Industrie

Service, GmbH, will share his experience in Germany and Europe to

address how Japan might deal with these and other nuclear safety-related

questions. He will explain the current European and German industries'

perspective that all potentially hazardous supplies from Japan should

only be given permission to be exported if they have been found to be

contamination-free in a dependable and legally binding manner.

Dr. Schmollack is a radiation protection expert with 20 years of

experience in radiation protection and 13 years in nuclear power safety.

He has been involved in various projects worldwide for licensing of

nuclear facilities in the design, construction, operation and

decommissioning stages. He is currently advising various organizations

in regards to radiation protection guidelines and nuclear power safety concepts.
