The role of private equity in the economy has come under increasing scrutiny over the past several years, especially in the U.S. with presidential candidate Mitt Romney's background at a leading U.S. private equity firm. In Japan as well, private equity has been viewed with skepticism, sometimes being labeled as hagetaka (vulture) funds. Yet academic studies have indicated that private equity contributes to economic growth, and private equity firms are a significant force in the Japanese M&A market.
