In February 2011, "A Day Made of Glass (DMOG)", Corning's futurist video originally intended for internal use, was placed on YouTube, almost as an afterthought. Much to Corning's surprise, DMOG went viral: at over 18 million hits it became the most popular corporate promotional video ever. Peter Bocko, who was Technical Advisor for the video and its sequels, will discuss the state of technology behind the DMOG vision and how it is simply an extension of decades-long trends in materials, electronics and applications in which Japan has had a central role.
During Dr. Bocko's presentation he will survey the future of these technologies and the expanding role of high-tech glass. In addition, some of the attendant non-technical issues arising from an immersive information environment, including privacy and sustainability, will be explored. What will pace new technology: technical practicability or commercial opportunity? Will value propositions be proven outside of conventional information appliances...such as architectural and automobile fields? Finally, what is the potential for the DMOG vision to enhance the human to human connection? These and other questions will be addressed.
In March 2011, Bocko first spoke to the Chamber and a few of the comments were, "Very clear and thought-provoking messages, which will definitely help develop new business with Japanese companies." "This event far exceeded my expectation. Great speaker...so much impressed to find out Bocko-san actually thinks like Japanese (with much more strategic thinking than the Japanese execs)!!" So you architects, auto suppliers and damn, if app creators don't find value in attending, then I don't know who will.
Dr. Peter L. Bocko is chief technology officer for Corning Glass Technologies and a holder of eleven patents. Dr. Bocko joined Corning Incorporated in 1979 and contributed to Corning's participation in the flat panel display revolution in a variety of leadership positions. Last June, he repatriated after a 5-year assignment in Tokyo. Now based in Corning, New York, he continues to be responsible for new product innovation across Corning's glass technology businesses with a particular focus on emerging high technology applications in Asia.
