***A speaker has been added*** Earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis: the triple disasters of March 2011 hit Japan when it was already feeling vulnerable, its confidence shaken by debt, deflation and political inertia. In the short term, no one doubts Japan's capacity to rebuild, but the country still faces daunting long-term challenges. Its population is aging and its workforce is shrinking. In trade and diplomacy, Japan faces new pressures from a rising China. Leading Japanese companies struggle to become true global competitors. Meanwhile, the country's education system continues to emphasize rote learning and cramming at the expense of innovation and creative thinking. And now, Japan has a branding problem. ACCJ presents a special lunch event, in connection with the global book launch for "Reimagining Japan: The Quest for a Future That Works," a collection of eighty essays from some of the world's leading thinkers and personalities. At this event, contributors to the project, plus others from the world of journalism and advertising, will encourage discussion on Japan's future. What can we do to make a difference, and why does it matter? The contributors will also share their unique experiences of putting this project together. Henry Tricks is Tokyo Bureau Chief of The Economist and a contributor to "Reimagining Japan: The Quest for a Future That Works." Taro Minami is Planning Director at the Creative Innovation Center, Dentsu Inc. in Japan, where he uses the creative thinking process to help develop new business opportunities for client companies. Brian Salsberg is a partner at McKinsey & Company and leader of the Japan Consumer and Retail Practice. He is co-editor of "Reimagining Japan: The Quest for a Future That Works." Glen S. Fukushima is chairman of Airbus. After practicing law, he was a senior official at the Office of the US Trade Representative, 1985・0. Since then, he has been a senior executive at AT&T, Arthur D. Little, Cadence Design Systems, and NCR. He also served as vice president and president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (1993・9) and on the boards of companies and nonprofit organizations in the US, Japan, and Europe. A graduate of Deep Spring, Stanford and Harvard, he was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Tokyo, 1982-83. Melanie Brock is Regional Manager of Meat and Livestock Australia in Japan. With her experience in Japan in food marketing, consulting and project management, she brings a wealth of knowledge from the import/export industry. The book "Reimagining Japan: The Quest for a Future That Works" is a compilation of essays by over eighty men and women from around the world that explores the challenges and opportunities facing Japan in its recovery. Contributors include CEOs, economists, Japan scholars, foreign-policy experts, authors and journalists, as well as stars from sports and culture. This diverse and distinguished collection of authors offers perspectives on Japan in essays that are insightful, thought-provoking and sometimes contradictory. One theme stands out: Japan's destiny is not fixed. The country can defy the prophecies of inevitable decline - if it acts without delay. VENUE: Tokyo American Club, Manhattan (B2) MAP: NOTE: This meeting is OFF THE RECORD
