Two divergent views appear to exist within the multinational pharma community regarding Japan and its regulatory and reimbursement environment. On one hand, you have the traditionalist view that bringing a product to market in Japan remains extremely costly, time consuming and frustrating. On the other, you have a growing number quietly saying that things have and are improving; that the government's efforts are reducing time to market, rewarding innovation and improving the overall value proposition for new drugs in Japan.

In this session, detailed trend data on new drug approvals will be presented to help shed light on these views and help pharma multinationals update their planning assumptions. Key trends to be examined include new drug approval volumes, drug lag, and premium reimbursement awards. Additionally, trends in tie-up activity involving Japanese pharma will also be presented.

Ken Graves is a partner with L.E.K. Consulting and leads L.E.K.'s Tokyo practice. His experience includes over 12 years in strategy consulting and over 24 years in the healthcare industry. He advises pharmaceutical, diagnostic and medical technology multinationals on their market growth strategies and regularly serves as an advisor to several medtech industry associations. Ken earned his B.S. degree from Oregon State University and a M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
