Many scientists believe that the industries that hold the greatest potential for future research are in the fields of: biotechnology, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology and telecommunications. Research universities are working together with commercial enterprises to apply new technical discoveries in the real world. Tohoku University has had a long tradition of innovation and collaboration with the private sector and is nurturing the next generation of Japan's scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs. Following the 3/11 disaster, Tohoku University intends to play a major role in the recovery of the region by finding new and diverse ways to work with domestic and foreign investors to create a hub of entrepreneurial activity.

You are invited to hear Specially Assigned Professor Akihiro Isomura of Tohoku University's International Cooperation Division describe recent activities aimed at accelerating opportunities for entrepreneurs in the Tohoku region and to meet some of the university's researchers and students. Specially Assigned Professor Isomura received a B.S. and M.S. degree from Tohoku University in Applied Physics and Engineering in 1980 and 1982, respectively. Since April 2011, he has been a Specially Appointed Professor in the International Cooperation Division of Tohoku University's Office of Cooperative Research and Development. Previously, he had actively engaged in magnetic materials research, microwave dielectric ceramic research and the development of a microwave resonator filter. Specially Assigned Professor Isomura was also in charge of planning and launching new R&D programs, which included the Industry and Academia Collaboration. Before starting his carreer as an engineer, he taught mathematics at Ishinomaki-Kita and Sendai-Nishi Senior High Schools in Miyagi, as well as coaching baseball. He has applied for more than 70 patents in magnetic materials, dielectric materials and MW filters.

Furthermore, some of his patents are registered by the USPTO. Specially Assigned Professor Isomura will be accompanied by two to three venture capitalists and his colleagues who will be available for one-on-one meetings between 2:00 – 2:30 p.m.
