Tensions in the Straits of Hormuz, the South China Sea and the Senkaku Islands can escalate into a crisis that will pose serious challenges for Japan. While strengthening its alliance with the United States, Japan is seeking to work out productive relationships with China and the countries of the Middle East. What are the possible and most likely scenarios? What is the future for energy policy in Japan and how will these events affect Japan's plans to export nuclear technology and develop clean energy? What avenues are available for cooperation with the U.S. in meeting these challenges? You are invited to hear the views of Yoshiji Nogami on these issues as the landscape facing Japan's foreign policy evolves and how your business in Japan may be impacted.
Yoshiji Nogami, former Ambassador to the U.K. and former most senior diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is President and Director of the Japan Institute of International Affairs. His overseas posts include Economic Counsellor at the embassy in the U.S. and Consul-General in Hong Kong. Mr. Nogami was also Ambassador to the OECD in Paris in 1997-99. He was Senior Visiting Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs.
