Now that the 2012 Presidential election is behind us and after weeks, indeed months, of proposals and counter-proposals, seemingly endless negotiations and down-to-the-wire drama, the last minute tax showdown in 2012 finally came to rest on January 2, 2013 when President Obama signed the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012. The new laws bring to taxpayers a more complicated set of tax calculations involving different thresholds, different rates and new provisions that drive the overall U.S. individual income tax rates higher than most of us have seen for many years.

Even though the new laws won't affect the filing of our 2012 tax returns, knowing what the future has in sight for taxpayers should initiate meaningful and informed decisions on tax planning for 2013. So what are the major changes in tax laws for 2013 which we should be aware of? In addition, as we prepare our 2012 tax returns, items of interest to U.S. individuals living abroad are the foreign earned income exclusions, AMT relief, foreign tax credits, Roth conversion rules, foreign bank account reporting, and the aftermath of the inaugural year of the foreign financial asset statement.
