Featured Committee: The Energy and Environment Committee Tackles Environmental and Energy-Related Issues of Concern to ACCJ Members

The ACCJ Energy and Environment Committee consists of professionals from diverse industries that focus on resolving environmental and energy-related issues that are of concern to our members.

The Committee organizes and hosts a variety of industry events, providing venues for members to engage with one another, senior leaders in Japanese industry and officials from both the U.S. and Japanese governments.

Events hosted by the Committee just in the last year have included briefings with U.S. Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu, Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman as well as interactive discussions with METI officials on last year’s power cuts and a panel discussion on “Green Innovation.” The Committee also organized the key energy-related panel session at the APCAC Business Summit this past March on “Energy and the Environment: Working Toward a Secure Energy Future in a Carbon-Constrained World.” Watch the panel discussion online here.

The committee has been closely following the impact of last year’s earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster, and meets regularly to discuss these and other environmental/energy issues of import to the U.S. and foreign business community.

viwepoint thumbThis year the Committee is focused on increasing its advocacy activities. Earlier this May, the Committee issued a viewpoint, “Ensure that the Renewable Energy Feed-In-Tariff Promotes Japan’s Short- and Long-Term Electric Energy Goals,” which has been used to advocate on behalf of members to ensure that the U.S. and other foreign business community’s views on how best to implement a feed-in-tariff are taken into consideration by the Government of Japan. The Committee followed this by providing public comments to specific aspects of the proposed feed-in-tariff legislation. Committee leaders will be presenting the viewpoint to senior Japanese officials to ensure that the policy recommendations are brought to the attention and well understood by those involved in implementation of the feed-in-tariff.

The Committee has become one of the most active and advocacy-focused committees in the Chamber as it seeks to pursue avenues in which its policy influence can have a tangible and positive impact for Chamber members and the broader foreign business community. Currently the Committee is drafting other viewpoints to address a number of energy and environmental related issues in relation to the proposed new Basic Energy Plan and general energy policy with plans to release and utilize them later this year. The Committee would welcome input and support on upcoming viewpoints from those with interest and experience in the energy/environment policy field.

Please contact the ACCJ office if you would like to become involved with the Energy and Environment Committee or would like to know more about their activities.
