The Entrepreneurs Forum/Talking Business Series 2013 - Maintaining "IP Freedom" - Avoid Entangling your IP in Legacy Deals
Frequently, high tech start-ups and SMEs use their valuable IP as bargaining chips in business tie-ups with larger business partners or to win crucial business from important customers. Beneficial in the short run, but there is risk too a reduction in the value of the company in the eyes of future acquirers and investors. This month, The Entrepreneurs Forum/Talking Business Series 2013 will hold a hands on / legal clinic type event with David Case, an IP partner at White & Case Tokyo. The event will cover topics of identifying and protecting your IP. As a learning tool, David will share with attendees war stories, horror stories and anecdotes from VC investment and strategic M&A matters. He will also provide tips for companies to consider before entering into business tie-ups that involve selling off part of their IP.
This session is best suited for start-ups and SME's that use or will use their IP portfolio in third party arrangements to grow their business. Key topics will be:
- Forms of IP
- Identifying your IP
- Protecting your IP
- How VCs and others evaluate your IP
- IPs tied in knots
- Strategies for outbound licensing
- Strategies for inbound licensing
