Come hear a lively panel discussion about the future of health care in Japan and an overview of potential policy solutions from the newly announced ACCJ-EBC Health Policy White Paper. The white paper includes policy proposals on 36 different topics, from mental health, cancer screening, vaccines and diabetes to cardiovascular disease, healthcare worker safety and infection control, all of which are placing a rising burden on Japanese society and economy. Nearly two dozen ACCJ and European Business Council member companies joined forces to develop the health policy white paper based on the belief that improving the physical and mental health of the Japanese people will not only result in a higher quality of life and save long-term healthcare costs, but also increase labor productivity and economic growth. All luncheon participants will receive a printed copy of the newly published white paper (bilingual).

Traditionally, the Japanese healthcare system has focused more on treating people after they develop diseases, and less on preventing diseases. Faced with an aging population and a large fiscal debt, more attention is shifting to the questions of how to enable people to stay healthy and remain in the workforce longer while keeping health treatment costs under control. The newly launched government sponsored "Healthy Japan 21" initiative contains policy targets for wellness and prevention and early detection covering both chronic and infectious disease. This government effort and other recent policy shifts clearly demonstrate the importance the Japanese government is now placing on wellness, prevention, early detection and early treatment of disease and to extending the average healthy lifespan in Japan.

The good news is that experts estimate that every additional year of healthy lifespan adds 4% to GDP growth. Investments in wellness and prevention can result in sustainable workforce productivity gains and reductions in worker absenteeism and disability. We believe that the white paper's evidence-based global best practices can play a constructive role in further shifting Japan's world leading healthcare system to a prevention, screening, early detection, early diagnosis, early treatment paradigm that will result in better patient outcomes and long-term cost savings.

Whether you are in the healthcare industry or simply interested in the direction of healthcare in the world's first super aged society, this event will provide you with plenty of food for thought.
