Mr. Kurt Tong, Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy, Visits with ACCJ-Chubu Members

The new Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Mr. Kurt Tong, was in Nagoya on March 21 to visit the U.S. Consulate and American Center here in central Japan. The consulate graciously worked with the Business Programs Committee to invite ACCJ-Chubu members to a breakfast at the Hilton to meet, ask questions, and exchange ideas with Mr. Tong.

Mr. Tong has spent most of his more than 20 years in the U.S. Foreign Service in East Asia, including serving at U.S. embassies in Manila, Tokyo, Beijing, and Seoul. Most recently, he was U.S. Ambassador for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), while concurrently serving as the Economic Coordinator for the State Department's Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. After casual introductions, the soft-spoken Mr. Tong talked briefly on his thoughts on relations between the U.S. and Japan. He mentioned that he hopes there will be more interpersonal networking between the peoples of our two nations to maintain our strong relationship well into the future. One of Mr. Tong's primary reasons for being in Nagoya was to learn more about the Chubu region, so he was very interested in the local ACCJ members' questions and comments. The breakfast meeting was both interesting and informative for both sides of the table.
