Cultural Competence: What's In It For Me?

2011-12-01: The Business Programs Committee and the Women in Business Committee hosted an interactive cultural training workshop with Alyssa Bantle, a professional business coach and trainer specializing in Culture and Communication. Ms. Bantle shared what a competency is and how competency development is an ongoing learning process. Participants then learned the importance of getting past surface awareness of culture to a deeper understanding, and the implications of a particular business-related interaction were discussed in groups.

Finally, Ms. Bantle focused on value differences on a continuum and showed how values can be culture-specific and that different cultures often have a comfort zone located at different places on the continuum. Understanding cultural values can benefit anyone doing business in a multi-cultural environment.

Leadership in Entrepreneurial Ventures

2011-11-24: ACCJ president Michael J. Alfant casually addressed a group of Chubu chapter members and guests on the topic of Leadership in Entrepreneurial Ventures in a meeting room within the offices of Oaklawn Marketing. The CEO of Fusion Systems spoke from experience on starting a business in Japan. He also gave candid comments on recent business events and how they may affect the ACCJ and businesses in Japan in general. For guests looking for practical insight that might not be taught in business schools, Alfant did not disappoint. With numerous anecdotes from his experiences over 20 years in Japan, he gave examples of how the ways of doing business and government regulations have changed over the years.

Solar Synergies: How Academic and Business Worlds Combine

2011-11-02: The External Affairs Committee (EAC) held a special meet and greet with the University of Michigan's (UM) Solar Power Car Team on Wednesday, November 2nd, at the Westin Hotel. Approximately 60 people showed up to hear UM's faculty and students talk about their experiences from academic and business world perspectives.

From the academic side, UM students and Professor Volker Sick talked about some of their challenges associated with building, testing, and racing a solar powered car. From the business side, students and Mr. Umesh Patel, Director of Business Engagement, talked about funding, marketing and promoting the project as well as the variety of internships available at UM.

The UM team visited Japan after placing 3rd in the World Solar Challenge in Australia. The World Solar Challenge is a friendly team competition to be the fastest team to traverse 3,000km through the heart of the Australian outback.

Special thanks to ACCJ member company, IMRA, for sponsoring the car and arranging the visit.

How Do You Overcome the Challenges of Employing a Diverse Workforce?

2011-11-01: Ms. Ann Sado, Representative Director of A to Z Sado Enterprises Ltd. joined us to talk about the challenges she sees that will affect Japanese companies as it becomes necessary to employ a more diverse workforce. In particular, by referring to Power Competencies and accompanying Key Behaviors, Ms. Sado discussed how being diversity-competent is already becoming critical for leaders, whose responsibilities require them to be both innovative problem solvers and diversity-competent role models. In addition, Ms. Sado introduced wiwiw, which is a program that supports employees in returning to their positions after maternity/paternity/care-giving leave, and explained how such a program is already benefiting over 450 major corporations in Japan.

ACCJ Consular Breakfast with the ACCJ Leadership

2011-10-20: The Business Programs Committee hosted an informal, yet informative, breakfast meeting at the Nagoya Hilton Hotel on October 20 with the new principal officer at the U.S. Consulate Nagoya, Harry Sullivan. Attending were ACCJ Chubu leadership and members, as well as the Nagoya American Center Director, Stephen Wheeler, and the consulate's political/economic specialist, Tamaki Mizuno.

The breakfast proved to be a good opportunity for the ACCJ Chubu and the new consul to get to know each other. Topics discussed included a suggestion to revise U.S. visa regulations to make it easier for young Japanese adults to get more business experience and establish business relationships in the U.S.

Mr. Sullivan was enthusiastic to cooperate with ACCJ Chubu and followed up with an e-mail of thanks and a list of ideas for further cooperation. "I think both sides at the breakfast recognize that further potential synergy exists between ACCJ Chubu and the Consulate," noted the new principal officer.

Some of the ideas Mr. Sullivan suggested included opening the consul's residence, as a consular function, to a matchmaking event between local Japanese firms and ACCJ members, as well as creating programs to promote and mentor entrepreneurial activity for both Americans and Japanese.

Challenges in the Workplace and Strategies to Succeed

2011-09-07: We were very honored to have four speakers join us for the recent Information Exchange co-hosted with the Tokai Japan Canada Society, Business Committee.  Our speakers all shared examples of challenges that they needed to overcome in order to succeed in their careers, and later joined the audience to answer questions and listen to others share their experiences in smaller groups.

Ms. Nao Geisler, President of Geisler Group, shared a story about her early career when she was set a task that she considered nearly impossible.  By learning how to complete the task she realized that anything is possible if you have the will, which later led  her to start, grow, and run a successful international school.

Mr. Darrell Harris Manager of the Secretarial Section, Oak Lawn Marketing, Inc. attributed his success in Japan to the strength he obtained from believing in himself, and making and maintaining a good network of people around him.

After struggling to find employment as a female surgeon, Ms. Michiyo Yakushiji found her place in another department in the medical field: assisting the terminal patients. Through her experience in this work Ms. Yakushiji became determined not to give up on anything, and then went on to become a mother of three, University Professor and candidate for a seat as a Diet member.

Mr. Hisashi Yokoi, Labor and Social Security Attorney & President of NPO BitL shared his experience of being a Japanese “salaryman”, and how the turning point for him was when he became a father.  Mr. Yokoi described the personal fulfillment he obtained by committing to parenting just as he committed to his career, and he now has many opportunities to share his experiences by speaking to HR departments of companies, universities and economic organizations.

4th Annual "Everyone can Golf" Tourney

2011-09-25: The 4th Annual 'Everybody Can Golf Tourney' was held at Kagamigahara Country Club with a total of 23 ACCJ members and guests on a beautiful Sunday morning. The event provided the participants a chance to meet new people from the Chubu region and enjoy a round of golf at an exclusive country club.

After the formalities, the first group of 4 teed-off just after 7am with some glorious drives and others not so glorious drives. A break after the first 9 holes provided the opportunity for people to sit down, trade scores and enjoy a light snack or an early morning beer. After 18 holes of golf, some tired (and sunburnt) faces headed for bath and lunch with relief and anxiously awaited the final tournament results.

The prize ceremony was held at Shooters Bar & Grill with prizes for the nearest pin, longest drive, best score, worst score, best man, best woman and so on. Participants of all levels were able to earn a prize. The overall winner,Mr. Brian Aycock took home the grand prize of a night for 2 in an executive suite at the Hilton Nagoya. Other prizes from Aqua Alpine, Shooters, OLM, Interlink, and The Meat Guy were gratefully received.

The event proved to be a great success and a big thanks goes out to the sponsors and participants involved for making it a great day for all. A wide range of participants from diverse backgrounds and all skill levels make this tournament truly a 'Everyone Can Golf Tourney'. I look forward to seeing you all again next year.

2011-07-20: Guest speaker Mr. Hidenori Sakanaka, the Executive Director of the Japan Immigration Policy Institute, gave a presentation about Japan's demographic crisis and immigration policies. One of the leading authorities on Japan's immigration issues, Mr. Sakanaka highlighted some of the key areas of concern for Japan's population in the next fifty years, areas for growth, and the necessity for a more multi-ethnic Japan.

Mr. Sakanaka also talked about his recently published article in The Wall Street Journal, and the importance of changing Japan Inc's conservative mindset by becoming more open and diverse. Mr. Sakanaka spoke that the demographic crisis affects us here in Aichi as well, stating that "not only did the total population decline between 2000 and 2009, but the percentage of working-age persons (age 15-64) dropped to 65.5% from 69.8%".

Attendees also received the ACCJ Growth Strategy Task Force's white paper along with other economic and research reports. Thank you to all that attended and please follow Mr. Sakanaka on his blog SAKANAKA CHANNEL. The text is in Japanese only.

We feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Lloyd, who through events like this has helped and inspired hundreds of people to learn how to structure and run a business from its initial startup stages and beyond. Diversity and Succeeding in the Workplace

2011-06-02: At the official launch of the Women in Business Chubu Chapter, our speaker Masako Arakane, President of QUALIA Inc., explained that the concept of diversity in Japan is to develop a corporate environment/culture where all employees, regardless of gender, are able to fully leverage their potential to contribute to the growth of the organization. In America, where Ms. Arakane learned about diversity and inclusion, the concept of diversity involves a wider spectrum that covers not only men and women working together, but also people of different ages, backgrounds, and abilities to make a team that is more representative of society. After covering the need for diversity in Japanese corporations, Ms. Arakane explained how to successfully implement such policies and advised that such changes require a preparation period where managers and staff are educated about why such measures are necessary. Thank you to our speaker and all the attendees for making such a memorable evening!

Marketing In Motion: Telling Your Story

2011-04-13: This event presented by Anthony Gilmore of Nameless Films was a smashing success. In his entertaining multimedia presentation, Mr. Gilmore touched on a variety of topics ranging from inexpensive filming techniques and how to make your own equipment, to the basics of storytelling. Mr. Gilmore explained in detail how content is king, and how the development of the story and script on paper, prior to ever picking up the camera, is far more crucial to the overall experience for potential viewers than actual techniques or effects during the final polishing of a project. The event was invaluable for any aspiring filmmaker or to anyone wishing to just make better use of their handy-cam. His presentation was both valuable and entertaining for all, and we at the ACCJ / IBC look forward to having Mr. Gilmore join us again.

Breakfast Meeting with U.S. Consulate Nagoya

2011-04-04: Approximately a dozen ACCJ members took advantage of the opportunity to meet with three U.S. diplomatic representatives based in Nagoya on April 4 at the Nagoya Hilton Hotel. The informal event included Jonas Stewart, Consulate Principal Officer; Stephen Wheeler, Nagoya American Center Director; and Commercial Consul Edward Yagi; as well as the consulate's political/economic specialist, Tamaki Mizuno.

The planned topics of discussion included the consular officers' insights on business, cultural, and political issues, and answer to questions about U.S.-Japan relations, consular activities, and anything else of interest to the ACCJ community. However, the discussion focused predominately on the events following the earthquake and tsunami in the Tohoku region. The consular officers' frank and insightful words on relief efforts, safety concerns, and economic effects were informative and contributed to the peace of mind of members present.
