An Appeal to Help Japanese Disaster Victims

The ACCJ is collecting funds to help the victims of the Japanese earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disasters. With 2,700 members in Japan, the ACCJ is uniquely situated to identify charitable organizations that are making a difference in the lives of the disaster victims. As a large organization, we can collect and disburse more relief goods and funds than we can as individuals. With your help, we can make an immediate and lasting difference in the lives of those who have been affected by these tragic events.

Background on the ACCJ

The ACCJ set up its Community Service Fund after our experience donating nearly 32 million yen to 18 organizations who worked to support the victims of the 1995 earthquake that killed 6,000 and destroyed the city of Kobe. In the aftermath of that earthquake, the ACCJ supported children’s programs, schools, missions to the foreign refugee community, and other local, relief-focused organizations. Since then, ACCJ chapters have continued to hold annual fund raising events to support charitable activities in our local communities.

Our 2011 Tohoku Earthquake Disaster Appeal

In response to the requests of many friends in the United States and former ACCJ members, we want to give you an opportunity to join our efforts to support the people of Japan during these trying times. We are teaming up with the American School in Japan (ASIJ), which has a tradition of service to the community that is even longer than the ACCJ’s. The ASIJ-ACCJ partnership allows U.S. donors to support disaster relief through this tax-qualified entity. Working together, we can leverage our deep ties to local communities and ensure that the donations we receive are well-spent in a manner that will provide immediate and lasting relief for those in need.

ACCJ and ASIJ will comply with all applicable IRS rules and regulations, and neither will take any administrative fees from your donations. The Friends of ASIJ, an established charitable entity in the United States that has provided support to the school for many years, will acknowledge your contributions with appropriate documentation to substantiate your donation for U.S. tax deduction purposes.

For our part, we will be reporting to our members and to you about our activities to help Japan recover from this unfolding tragedy. We will also recognize you and your companies on our website and in our magazine.
