Japan’s massive 16 trillion yen electricity market is undergoing an unprecedented transformation as it deregulates, as hundreds of new companies enter the market, enabled by key ICT initiatives which have “digitized” the sector. Fundamental to this is the rapid introduction of smart meters. Landis+Gyr, the world’s largest smart meter supplier, is in the midst of deploying a massive 27 million meter project with TEPCO. The project includes rapidly implementing the world’s largest singular IP network deployment and the software platform to support data collection, analysis and sharing.
With usage data now digitized and sharable, new entrants have rapidly been developing new services to entice customers to switch away from the utilities for their electricity needs. KDDI's AU Denki leads the pack of these new retailers, with innovative services including smartphone app-based usage built on the big data analysis technology from smart meters. In addition, "Virtual Power Plant" which distribute electricity resources control service (currently in pilot) is based on cutting edge ICT.
This event will highlight the story of how Japan has leaped ahead of other deregulated markets in terms of digitalization of its core infrastructure and what this will mean for competitive service providers and their prospective customers. Steve Jenks, who leads Landis+Gyr’s engagement with TEPCO, will share the story of how they won this unprecedentedly massive contract, what it means for Japan and the industry, as well as some views into innovations from outside Japan based on Landis+Gyr’s global perspective. Then, Koichiro Nakagiri, the head of KDDI’s energy business, will discuss how KDDI is leveraging the huge amounts of big data it harvests as a retailer to develop new, innovative services which are revolutionizing a previously analog / monopoly sector. Join us for a unique view into where the residential electricity markets will be heading and what it could mean for you.
The session will include both presentations and a panel discussion, and will be conducted part in English and partly in Japanese with interpretation provided.
