The US-China trade war is the opening skirmish in a battle for the commanding heights of the future technology world. While tariffs and trade deficits crowd the headlines, the core conflict is about dominating the most important technologies of tomorrow, from silicon chips to artificial intelligence to the internet of things to advanced manufacturing to all manner of communications equipment and standards. Underlying this struggle is the incompatible political DNA of the two countries as well as their mismatched economic systems. What is clear is that this will be a protracted battle. What is less clear is how countries and companies can navigate their way this political and economic minefield.
