What does it mean to communicate successfully across cultures?
The ACCJ is delighted to host Mari Noda, Professor of Japanese at Ohio State University to discuss this interesting topic. Professor Noda will use the idea of performance to address the question of effective communication and offer some practical strategies. Three main ideas will be discussed: the importance of performance, memory, and domain.
The art of performance is a useful communication tool for a number of endeavors, including learning a new language. Performance is very powerful because it is directly connected to our memory. We can often visualize successful future interactions if we have a strong memory of past performances to draw upon. “Domain knowledge” is also a particularly important factor for cross-cultural communication as it provides a point of “common ground” where people from different cultures can share commonalities in their assumptions and experiences. In Aerospace and other industries, communication is key. Come learn how we can improve the communication!
Mari Noda (Ph.D., Cornell University), a professor of Japanese at Ohio State University, is currently in Japan as a Hakuho Foundation Japan Research Fellow at Waseda University examining winning speeches of the International Speech Contest. She has published numerous textbooks and currently lectures in Japanese and East Asian language pedagogy. Professor Noda also serves as President of Japan-America Society of Central Ohio and her voice is on the Golden Record aboard Voyager 1, currently somewhere in the orbit of interstellar space.
