Ambassador Paul W. Speltz serves on the International Advisory Board to the President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB, www.aiib.org). Paul will discuss the AIIB and other Chinese initiatives, such as the One Belt One Road (OBOR), the Silk Road Fund, as well as current PRC-U.S. relations and DPRK-related matters.
Previously, Paul was the U.S. Ambassador to and the Executive Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). As ACCJ members will be aware, Japan and the United States are members of the ADB, but at present neither country is a member of the AIIB. [Currently, 77 other countries, including Russia and most of the countries in the Asia Pacific and Middle East have joined the AIIB. By the end of the year, another 8 are planning to join the AIIB.]
Come to this unusual opportunity to learn what the AIIB is doing and how it may become one of the important sources of infrastructure finance in Asia. Paul is uniquely qualified to offer insights into the status of the AIIB, its objectives and comparisons with other multilateral institutions, such as the ADB. Having served in the past as the Financial Emissary to the U.S. Treasury for China, Paul has valuable perspectives to share with the ACCJ about current Chinese and North Korean motivations and strategies.
