Gion Festival Yamahoko Junko Viewing Program: Experience the Refined Beauty of Kyoto Traditions with Maiko

ROKU KYOTO is offering an exclusive opportunity to experience the Gion Festival, one of Kyoto’s most iconic summer traditions and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Originating more than a thousand years ago as a ritual to ward off epidemics, the festival continues to be deeply cherished by the people of Kyoto today.

Guests may enjoy one of the festival’s highlights, the Yamahoko Junko float procession, from the comfort of an indoor setting during the Saki Matsuri (Former Festival) on July 17 and the Ato Matsuri (Latter Festival) on July 24. Often referred to as a “moving museum,” the elaborately decorated floats proceed through the streets accompanied by traditional Gion-bayashi festival music, while a bilingual guide shares insights into the festival’s rich history and cultural significance.

The experience also includes ozashiki entertainment and dance performances by two maiko from Kamishichiken, as well as a hands-on miniature wagasa-making workshop led by artisans from Tsujikura, a long-established wagasa maker founded in 1690.

We invite you to discover a unique moment where Kyoto’s festival traditions, refined culture, and master craftsmanship come together in an unforgettable experience.
