Digital Economy

As data continues to fuel innovation, the internet-of-things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and big data are critical to driving economic growth and addressing societal challenges. The mandate of the Secure Digital Infrastructure Committee (SDIC) is to promote the integration of secure digital technologies across critical industries thereby enabling deeper U.S.-Japan cooperation and further enhancing mutual economic security.

In alignment with Japan’s renewed National Security Strategy, the committee emphasizes U.S.-Japan collaboration, international best practices, and transparent market-based standards. We also provide recommendations regarding new cybersecurity policy initiatives and cybersecurity-related regulatory activity, including issues such as Japan’s new security clearance scheme and supply chain security requirements for core infrastructure industries designated under Japan's Economic Security framework. The committee is committed to ensuring a level playing field and alignment in trustworthiness and cybersecurity methods between the U.S. and Japan, ensuring that risk management measures are aligned with best practices, informed by market realities, and appropriately scoped to deal with challenges such as state-sponsored risk.

The committee delivers impact through regular dialogue between government and private sector leaders from both nations, promoting technical leadership in cybersecurity to safeguard personal information, intellectual property, and industrial data.

Key priorities:

l U.S.-Japan Collaboration: Further enhance cooperation on digital security and technology innovation.

l National Security Strategy: Support Japan’s new cybersecurity initiatives and economic security policies in a way that continues to ensure fairness across industries and like-minded countries.

l Security Clearance and Supply Chain: Focus on implementation of security clearance schemes and supply chain security for critical industries, ensuring that measures are aligned with private sector realities and best practices.
