Consultant - Japan Market | Economic Development & Investment Promotion
Location: Tokyo (remote / hybrid work available)
Engagement: Full-time employment or a consulting contract of approximately four days per week
Sector: Economic development / international business / government and public-sector relations
Languages: Native-level Japanese and business-level English
Experience: Typically 5–10 years of relevant experience; junior consultant candidates may also be considered based on qualifications and interview
Position Overview
Our firm serves state and regional governments in North America and Europe, as well as other overseas public-sector clients. We support Japanese companies pursuing foreign direct investment (FDI) in client regions and help companies from those regions expand exports to Japan. The Consultant will work across the full engagement cycle, including lead generation, corporate outreach, meetings and mission delivery, stakeholder coordination, and pipeline management.
Key Responsibilities
1. Investment Promotion (Foreign Direct Investment)
Research, identify, approach, and attract Japanese companies that may be considering a new market entry or business expansion in a client region
Build relationships with JETRO, industry associations, foreign embassies in Japan, sector-specific organizations, and other relevant decision-makers and stakeholders
Arrange and participate in corporate meetings, site-selection discussions, and project briefings
Plan and coordinate site visits and business missions by Japanese companies to client regions
Support inbound client missions to Japan, investment seminars, and related promotional programs
2. Trade Promotion (Export Support)
Provide Japan market research, industry and regulatory intelligence, and market-entry support to exporters from client regions
Research and screen potential distributors, sales agents, and strategic partners in Japan
Plan and support trade-show participation, business-matching programs, and promotional events
3. Marketing
Prepare and manage Japanese- and English-language marketing materials, including brochures, presentations, and industry briefs
Support brand promotion for clients and the firm through websites, social media, and other digital channels
4. Reporting and Pipeline Management
Report client outreach, corporate meetings, lead progress, and results
Record and manage lead information, activity history, and pipeline status in the CRM system
Ideal Qualifications
The following experience and capabilities are desirable:
Prior experience in FDI attraction, trade promotion, international business development, site selection, public-sector engagement, or a related field
An established network within Japan’s corporate sectors and industry communities
Native-level Japanese and strong business communication skills in English
