The Impact of Social Media and AI on Elections and Our Choices: Examining the Foundations of Democracy in the Digital Age

Makaira K.K. welcomes you to a free event discussing the impact of social media and AI on elections with a panel of experts.

Event Overview

Looking back at the 2024 Tokyo gubernatorial election, Hyogo gubernatorial election, House of Representatives election, and House of Councillors election, the information environment surrounding elections has undergone significant changes. In particular, the rapid spread of social media and generative AI has had a major impact on election results and voters' decision-making processes.

The use of social media and generative AI in elections promotes the diversification of information channels and encourages citizens' direct political participation. On the other hand, the spread of false and/or misleading information and selective editing can exacerbate social division and hinder appropriate discussion.

To maintain a healthy democracy, it is essential to analyze the current state of information surrounding elections from various angles, discuss how the responsibilities and legal regulations of stakeholders and users (both content creators and recipients) should evolve in the future, and implement appropriate measures.

Therefore, this event will bring together diverse stakeholders involved in elections to discuss the future of elections in the SNS and AI era and the ideal form of democracy.
