Japanese Communications Specialist

The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) is a unique organization with a 77-year history of working with the U.S. and Japanese governments and the world's largest and most influential companies to strengthen the U.S.-Japan relationship. 

The ACCJ is a network of business executives and thought leaders from across Japan and the U.S. Positions at the ACCJ provide high visibility and are ideal for high performers with strong interest in policy and international relations and seek to gain expertise and experience in those areas. 

The ideal candidate has strong interest and passion in the U.S.-Japan relationship and politics and brings 3 or more years of work experience in either the private or public sector. This is a one year contract position based in Tokyo, with the opportunity for renewal. 

Overview of position

The Japanese Communications Specialist will play a key role in shaping and delivering the ACCJ’s messaging to Japanese external stakeholders and the public. The ideal candidate will be a strong writer and communicator who can manage multiple channels, has the ability to prioritize, produce high-quality content, support media engagement, and enhance the ACCJ's brand visibility and consistency. 

We seek a creative and motivated team player with a positive attitude who brings innovative ideas and takes initiative in a fast-paced environment. This requires strong attention to detail, excellent project management, and strong communication skills. As a communicator with marketing and social media skills, the candidate will also work with the team to conceptualize and produce promotional materials, social media, and website content. 

The Japanese Communications Specialist must work under tight deadlines, manage multiple tasks and support a fast-paced working environment. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to items listed below. 

Communications

  • Support the development and implementation the overall communications strategy for ACCJ 

  • Draft press releases, social media posts and other external messaging to promote ACCJ advocacy in a timely manner 

  • Identify opportunities to collaborate with external stakeholders to raise the profile of ACCJ in Japan 

 Media Relations

  • Assist in developing media strategies, coordinating press outreach, and managing media inquiries 

  • Identify media opportunities to promote the ACCJ’s activities and advocacy 

  • Maintain and develop relationships with media representatives in Japan 

  • Research and track ACCJ’s presence in the media 

  • Engage with Japanese media as directed to support the ACCJ in developing coverage of its positions, responding to inquiries, establishing a database of media contacts 

Social Media Management

  • Manage social media accounts, focus on building and engaging online communities through various social platforms in English and Japanese

  • Utilize analytics tools to track performance and make data-driven improvements to the website and social media strategy

  • Ensure content is published across various platforms in a timely and coherent manner 

Qualifications

  • Very strong native-level Japanese and business-level English-language skills

  • Passion and interest in international relations and/or U.S.-Japan relations 

  • Background in Journalism preferred

  • At least 3 years professional experience in the public and/or private sector

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and in person

  • Strong writing, editing, research, organizational and logistical coordination skills

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic computer literacy is required, FileMaker is a plus

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Candidate must reside in Japan at the time of application
